Aesthetic rhinoplasty can be performed with an open or closed technique, depending on the patient's nose and the plastic surgeon's preference and expertise. In the open technique, the nasal column is cut, the nasal skin is pulled back and surgical maneuvers are performed. The incisions are then closed. In the closed technique, all incisions are made through the nose and changes are made through these incisions.
Dr. Hüseyin Güner mostly prefers the closed technique because the internal ligaments of the nose are preserved and unnecessary dissections are avoided. There is less bruising and edema and the recovery time is faster. Since there is no need to reorient the structures deformed during open rhinoplasty, the operation time is less. Experience is very important in closed rhinoplasty; the surgeon must have a good command of the internal anatomy. Dr. Güner performs open rhinoplasty if there is a traumatic deformity or if the case is a secondary condition that requires an open approach.
The same surgical technique may not be applied to every patient. The physical examination, the patient's needs and the doctor's expertise/preference will guide the choice of technique.
